IDC box header guide

IDC Box Headers and Shrouded Headers for Ribbon Cable PCB Connections

An IDC box header is a shrouded PCB header designed to mate with an IDC ribbon cable socket. Buyers should confirm pitch, rows, positions, mounting type, shroud shape, key slot direction, latch requirement, mating IDC socket, cable orientation and pin 1 marking before ordering.

IDC box headers are used when a flat ribbon cable needs to connect to a PCB in a controlled orientation. The plastic shroud guides the mating IDC socket, and the keyed slot can prevent incorrect insertion when the cable-side connector has the matching key.

These connectors are common in industrial control boards, I/O modules, PLC accessories, test equipment, display interfaces and internal wiring systems.

Key specifications to confirm

Pitch Commonly 2.54mm at the connector interface, but verify the project drawing.
Rows and positions Usually dual row, such as 2×5, 2×10, 2×20 or 2×25.
Mounting style Straight, right angle, SMT or through-hole controls cable exit direction.
Shroud and key direction Box style, keyed slot, low profile or latch-compatible structure affects mating fit.
Mating IDC socket Socket type, strain relief and key compatibility should be checked with the header.
Cable details Cable pitch, length, red-edge direction and connector orientation are required for assemblies.

Orientation is the main risk

Two IDC box headers may have the same pitch and pin count but different key slot direction, cable exit direction or body orientation. This can create cable twist, blocked assembly or reversed pin mapping.

For replacement work, send a mating-face photo, a top view and a side view. The mating-face photo shows key slot and pin layout; the side view shows body height and cable clearance.

RFQ checklist

Send a connector RFQ

Send drawing, sample photo, BOM, STEP, DWG or PDF files. Kirision can review pitch, rows, positions, mounting style, height, tail length, mating connector, plating, quantity and export document requirements before quotation.

ISO 9001 quality management documentation can be provided for qualified RFQ projects. RoHS material compliance review is available on request when export projects require it.

FAQ

Is an IDC box header the same as a shrouded header?

In many purchasing contexts, yes. It usually means a shrouded PCB header that mates with an IDC ribbon cable socket. Buyers should still confirm key direction, mounting style and latch option.

What should be checked before replacing a box header?

Check pin count, pitch, mounting direction, key orientation, body style and mating IDC connector fit. For right angle parts, confirm cable exit direction from a side view.

Can the header and ribbon cable be quoted together?

Yes. This is often safer because the header, socket, cable length, red-edge direction and cable exit direction can be checked as one assembly.

Why does pin 1 orientation matter?

Pin 1 orientation controls signal mapping through the ribbon cable. A connector can look mechanically correct but still create a reversed or twisted cable path if pin 1 is not aligned.
