Industrial IDC retention guide
Ejector Latch Headers for Secure IDC Connections in Industrial Control Boards
An ejector latch header is a shrouded PCB header with side latch arms for mating with IDC ribbon cable sockets. It is used when the cable connection needs retention or easier service removal. Buyers should specify pitch, positions, mounting style, key direction, latch geometry and the mating IDC cable connector.

Ejector latch headers are used when an IDC ribbon cable connection needs more retention than a standard box header. The latch arms hold the mating socket in place and help release the cable during service.
These headers are not selected only by electrical contact count. They must match the mating IDC socket mechanically, because latch height or latch shape can prevent proper locking even when pitch and pin count are correct.
Key specifications to confirm
| Pitch and positions | Common IDC systems use 2.54mm pitch with positions such as 2×10, 2×20 or 2×25. |
|---|---|
| Mounting style | Straight through-hole, right angle, SMT or other structure affects cable direction. |
| Key slot direction | Confirm keyed slot and pin 1 side to prevent reversed cable installation. |
| Latch geometry | Latch height, arm shape and clearance determine whether the socket locks and releases correctly. |
| Shroud dimensions | Body height and mating cavity size affect connector fit and board clearance. |
| Cable assembly | Cable length, red-edge direction and connector orientation are required when quoting the header and cable together. |
Why latch geometry matters
The latch arms are the main difference between an ejector latch header and a standard IDC box header. They are also the main sourcing risk.
For replacement parts, photos are useful but not enough for final production. Send photos from the mating face, side view and PCB mounting side, plus measurements or a drawing where possible.
RFQ checklist
- Pitch and positions such as 2×5, 2×10 or 2×20.
- Mounting style: straight, right angle, SMT or through-hole.
- Key slot direction, pin 1 position and latch style.
- Mating IDC socket type and strain relief option.
- Cable length and orientation if an assembly is required.
Send a connector RFQ
Send drawing, sample photo, BOM, STEP, DWG or PDF files. Kirision can review pitch, rows, positions, mounting style, height, tail length, mating connector, plating, quantity and export document requirements before quotation.
ISO 9001 quality management documentation can be provided for qualified RFQ projects. RoHS material compliance review is available on request when export projects require it.
FAQ
Why use an ejector latch header instead of a standard box header?
Latch arms improve cable retention and make cable removal easier during service. This helps equipment that may be opened, repaired or exposed to vibration.
What is the most common sourcing mistake?
The most common mistake is quoting by pin count only. Latch geometry, key direction, mounting style and mating IDC socket fit must also be checked.
Can a photo be used for quotation?
Photos can start the check, especially for orientation and body type. Final production should confirm dimensions by drawing, sample or approved specification.
Should the cable assembly be quoted together with the header?
Yes when the buyer needs a reliable cable-to-board connection. Quoting both parts together helps confirm socket fit, cable direction and pin 1 orientation.
